504 Accommodations

“504” is a provision of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973- a civil rights statute designed to prevent discrimination against individuals with disabilities. The purpose is to provide accommodations for students who have disabilities not otherwise covered under Special Education. A student 1) has a physical or mental impairment which substantially limits one or more activities (e.g. learning) or 2) has a record of such impairment, or 3) is regarded as having impairment is considered to have a disability under section 504 is eligible to receive accommodations. Accommodations may be physical, instructional, and/or behavioral in nature.

AB 825 “Comprehensive Student Support Grant”

Through the efforts of the Outreach Consultant/Psychologist, students and parents receive services such as crisis intervention, counseling, conflict mediation, referrals to outside agencies, and consultation with teachers and parents. Additionally the Outreach Consultant coordinates Student Study Team referrals and acts as a liaison between families and community agencies.

AVID

Avid is a four-year college prep elective class that aims to help students fain the skills and information needed in order to achieve their goal of going to college. It is for students who have the determination, the potential for success, and who need help in overcoming obstacles (such as first in family to go to college, single-parent family, low socioeconomic status, English learning, etc.)

Coordinated Services Committee

This committee provides a forum to identify students who are having academic, personal, or interpersonal difficulties that negatively affect progress in school and to address appropriate interventions for these students. The committee generally meets twice a month. Contact: Joan Elliot, ext. 4632

Counseling Services

The counselor at WHS provides support services to all students and parents. The role of the counselor is to assist students to achieve their educational, career, and/or vocational goals, to provide guidance to students in the area of social and personal decisions, and to help parents create an environment that promotes higher education.
